Verruca treatment

Verrucas are warts on the foot, caused by the human papillomavirus. Many clear on their own in time; when one hurts, keeps spreading or simply won’t go, we can treat it, including with Verrutop.

Is it a verruca?

Not every hard spot on the sole is one

Verrucas usually appear on the soles and toes, flattened by your weight, often with tiny black dots in them: small blood vessels, not seeds. They’re easily confused with corns, which need entirely different treatment. Squeezing a verruca from the sides tends to hurt; a corn hurts more when pressed directly. We’ll tell you which it is before suggesting anything.

Treatment

How we treat verrucas

Verrutop

After reducing the hard skin over the verruca, we apply Verrutop, a topical solution that dries out the verruca tissue. Over the following weeks it darkens and comes away. It’s painless, needs no dressings and doesn’t stop you swimming or exercising, and usually takes a few applications a few weeks apart.

Reducing and relieving

Taking down the hard skin that builds up over a verruca makes walking far more comfortable, and helps any treatment reach the verruca itself.

Advice on what to try first

For a small verruca that isn’t bothering you, waiting or a pharmacy treatment may be all you need. We’ll tell you honestly when that’s the case.

Simple habits that help

  • Keep it covered Use a waterproof plaster or a verruca sock at the swimming pool.
  • Don’t share Towels, socks and shoes can pass the virus on.
  • Wear sliders In communal showers and changing rooms.
  • Leave it alone Picking or scratching a verruca spreads it to other skin.

FAQs

Questions about verrucas

Is Verrutop suitable for children?

It’s often a good choice for children because it’s painless. We’ll check it’s suitable at the first appointment.

How many treatments will I need?

It depends on the size and age of the verruca and how your skin responds. Most people need a few visits; we’ll give you a realistic idea once we’ve seen it.

Can I still go swimming?

Yes. Cover the verruca with a waterproof plaster or a verruca sock.
